Warehouse Operations

Receiving and Staging

Inbound Logistics (Receiving and Staging):

As-is Process: Paper or bar-code based processes during inbound logistics involves multiple steps from identifying / scanning the dock-door barcode (to identify ASN), pallets or items from truck, and staging location which results in a LOT of time to unload an entire truck, while potentially introducing errors into the process due to missed scans.

With Spotlight:

  • Utilize tags on units and / or pallets to automate inbound logistics.
  • Auto identify dock door and storage bays with location tags.

Value:

  • Automated goods-receive reduces time to unload a truck (by upto 50%), increasing labor productivity and utilization while enhancing the overall inbound logistics process.
  • Location tags prevent ‘lost’ or incorrect inventory movement.

Put-away and Stock-take

Put-away and Stock-take:

As-is Process: Fork-lift operators go to staging bays to pick up pallets and Put-away in a location identified by the combination of [aisle, bin]. Cycle counts are done manually (paper based) or with a combination of barcode scans & human input. Both of the above processes are error-prone and time consuming.

With Spotlight:

  • Utilize bin and floor tags along with inputs to fork-lift operator via applications on the vehicle mounted display in order to perform Put-away.
  • Use a combination of unit / pallet tags + location tags to automate cycle counts and inventory mgmt.

Value:

  • RFID tags on bin and floor remove eliminate errors i.e. wrong Put-away of items as a result of original bin location - identified by WMS - being full.
  • Item level visibility at all times reduces lost or misplaced inventory and exceptions due to incorrect inventory movements.
  • Time to perform inventorycycle counts are reduced manifold by automating Stock-take.

Pick, Pack and Ship

Pick, Pack and Ship:

As-is Process: Fork-lift operators  are directed to a location identified by [aisle, bin] to pick up pallets and load onto trailer – when pallets are not found, time is spent trying to locate it. Outbound logistics is usually a manual and error prone process.

With Spotlight:

  • Utilize unit / pallet , bin and floor tags to manage and locate items.
  • Use RFID portals and mobile applications to automate the outbound logistics process.

Value:

  • No more ‘Easter-egg’ hunt in warehouses to locate lost or misplaced items.
  • Eliminates non-value and error prone manual scanning prior to shipping, and reduces time to load at each dock, thereby improving process efficiency.

Advantages of utilizing Spotlight technology :

  • Enhancing the efficiency of Inbound and Outbound logistics processes results in time savings from elimination of scanning units one by one, which in turn results in faster throughput of units to end customer.
  • Elimination of cascading errors during inventory storage and retrieval for order fill.
  • Reduced returns and charge-backs due to shipping of incorrect inventory.
  • Eliminates time, error and costs incurred due to manual stock-take.

The RFID system provided equivalent capabilities to those of IPR in terms of detecting and resolving process errors. It additionally provided the blood bank staff real-time visibility for blood products in transit from the hospital blood bank to the point-of-care and in remote storage in our emergency department.
